Probiotics have been found to treat anxiety and depression. What’s cool is that our gut is considered to be our second brain. Neurotransmitters like serotonin, our happiness hormone, are actually manufactured in the gut.

Here’s how to get your fix:

Add a daily dose of healthy probiotic rich powerhouses like sauerkraut, kombucha or cultured yogurt.

  • Add kraut (fermented cabbage) to things like scrambled eggs or burgers
  • Hack your happy hour by replacing sugar-y mixers with kombucha
  • Snack on some cultured yogurt and top it with grainless granola
  • Take a daily probiotic – find our favorite one in the shop

Researchers have found that a higher intake of fresh produce results in more energy, more calm and a greater sense of happiness with the magic number being 7 daily servings.

Here’s how to get your fix:

Make a quick green juice!

Recipe: Blend 1 cup cold water with 1 cup spinach and a squeeze of lemon. If you want it a little sweeter, add 1/2 cup frozen unsweetened berries.

As if you needed a reason to indulge, am I right? Researchers found that eating an ounce and a half of dark chocolate daily for 2 weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in people who rated themselves as highly stressed.

Here’s how to get your fix:

Snack on a no sugar trail mix of unsweetened coconut flakes, almonds and cacao nibs (nature’s chocolate chips!).

Foods high in omega 3 EPA & DHA fatty acids (think: salmon, sardines, tuna) help banish depression and mood swings while also improving your focus and memory.

Here’s how to get your fix:

  • Add smoked salmon to an omelette
  • Top salads with sardines
  • Mix up tuna with tahini (ground sesame seed paste) and pair it with some crackers

Turmeric acts as a natural anti depressant all thanks to the active compound called curcumin.

Here’s how to get your fix:

Make golden milk!

  • Add 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 tsp each of ground turmeric, ground cinnamon, ground ginger & a pinch of black pepper to a stovetop pan
  • Heat until warm & stir in 1 tsp honey for sweetness
  • Sip it warm or enjoy it iced post workout. You can even add it granola, smoothies or chia pudding!
