We’re so excited to welcome Emily D. to the obé fam! Emily blends her extensive knowledge of movement (from her professional dance background!) with a fiery creativity to bring a high-energy fully body workout in both her Dance + Sculpt classes. Want to learn more? We chatted with Emily #BTS
Tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m originally from outside of Chicago and I got into dance because my older brother was a dancer (I was just copying him!). I started to really pick it up and chose to major in it, eventually pursuing dance professionally in NYC. My mom is also a fitness professional and she always told me to get a fitness certification – I didn’t listen to her for a while (you know how you rebel against your parents!), but when I moved to NYC I realized I really wanted to work in that world. I started to work for a celebrity trainer and recently branched out on my own. For me, dance and fitness are interwoven – one informs the other and they go hand-in-hand for me!
What are you most excited to share with the obé fam?
A deeper layer of expression through movement. Fitness can be a really great outlet for anything emotionally or mentally that’s happening in your life (especially when you feel blocked or stressed). When you can channel those feelings through movement, that’s when you’ll see the biggest results and changes.
What are 3 things that members can expect to take away from your class?
Joy – that innate feeling you get from just moving your body! Freedom – when you focus on a task in front of you physically, it gets you out of your head, your to-do list, your daily stresses, etc. And lastly, a feeling of empowerment or limitlessness – I’m constantly finding limits and thresholds and then blasting past them. I want to help others to reach that same feeling.
What is your typical morning routine?
I wake up early & am always immediately hungry! I always eat eggs, avocado and toast – I can’t skip breakfast. From there, I like to take some time in the morning to take care of me and always journal. Even if it’s just for 5 minutes I find that it really helps clear my head and set the tone for the rest of my day.
Beauty product you can’t live without, between class and sweay selfies?
Essential oils! I use them daily – orange is a really great for an afternoon pick-me-up (no caffeine needed!) and peppermint is great for areas you feel sore.
Go-to healthy snack?
Dairy free yogurt with banana, nut butter, and granola. I carry it in a leftover Talenti gelato container so everyone thinks I’m eating gelato at 2pm on the subway platform, lol!
If you could have dinner with one person who would it be and where would you go?
Somewhere in Hawaii with Oprah – because she is the 👑 and is just so knowledgeable!
What motivates you to get up and move every day?
I always feel better when I start moving. No matter how sore, tired, lethargic or unmotivated I am, I will always feel better once I’m in motion. I’ve never regretted a workout. Movement moves the stagnation in our bodies and brings us more balance.
“I am.” I finish that sentence with whatever I’m feeling or trying to embody. I wrote on the white board for my first class, “I am clear,” so I would be clear in my body and my cuing. We can determine how we respond to life, or how we carry ourselves, simply by how we finish that sentence. I really try to make it count.
Anything else the obé fam should know about you?
I am an avid reader! I LOVE books and cannot wait to participate in the obé book club (I already finished the book for this month – Educated!)
